Hempstead, N.Y.-- Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) scored on a jump shot with 1.6 seconds remaining to force overtime and Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored six of his team-high 26 points in the extra period as Drexel (18-6, 10-4 CAA) came from behind to beat Hofstra, 95-87. The win snapped Hofstra's 28-game regular season home winning streak as the Pride dropped to 18-7 overall and 11-3 in the CAA..
Drexel took the lead for the first time early in overtime when Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military) made one of two free throws. The Dragons grabbed the offensive board and Elegar scored on the next two possessions to put Drexel up 83-78. The Dragons would not trail again as they made 13 of 16 free throws in the extra frame.
Drexel trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half on three different occasions. The Dragons began chipping away despite having three of their starters in foul trouble down the stretch. Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's) scored on consecutive three-point plays to trim the deficit to three at 68-65. The Dragons eventually tied the score at 71-71 when Scott Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) hit a pair of free throws at the 3:44 mark. Hofstra never trailed in the second half and took a two-point lead with just 31 seconds left when Mike Davis-Saab scored on a lay-up. That set up Drexel's final possession. Mejia had a three-point attempt miss, but Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) grabbed the rebound and Drexel called time out. After inbounding the ball, Mejia drove to the left and hit a fall away 10-footer to force the overtime.
Elegar came within one point of his career high with the 26 points. He was 10-for-14 from the line. Mejia had his best offensive game of the season with 25 points. He was 4-for-5 from long range. Mason and Hawthorne each had 14 points. Hawthorne, who added eight rebounds, scored 13 of his 14 points in the second half.
Loren Stokes led Hofstra with 29 points, including the 2,000th of his career. Antoine Agudio added 19, while Carlos Rivera scored 14 points.
The Dragons return home to face Delaware in the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday. The game begins at 4 p.m. and can be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
